Here you will find my thoughts on current superstars, opinions about recent matches or pay-per-views, and reviews of RAW, Smackdown and NXT. Like the WWE? Good, you're on the right page. Hate the WWE? Well, I hope you find me entertaining and insightful anyway. Welcome to Royal Ramble!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.comBlogger32125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-8976557272183429912014-04-23T17:51:00.001-05:002014-04-23T17:57:17.121-05:00Pro Wrestling: Local and LegendaryFor college this week, I wrote a sports article on professional wrestling, and I got the chance to interview none other than Kurt Angle. Thank you very much to Winnipeg's own Graeme Keam, AKA Mat Critic, for the amazing opportunity, and for taking the time to sit down and discuss with me this business that I love.

Below is the resulting article. I had soooo much content that I wanted to use, but I had a word limit of 1000, and after revisions, this was the result. I don't know if it's my best article, but it's my favourite, and I'll always look back fondly on it as possibly my last journalism-related assignment. Thanks again to Keam and Angle. I couldn't have done this without your generous input.

Enjoy the read!
Many people are probably familiar with hockey, basketball,
and football, and they can appreciate the talented professionals in these
sports because they can relate. They have their own experiences scoring goals,
shooting baskets, and catching passes—but how many people have hopped into a
wrestling ring and jumped off the top rope, or driven somebody through a table,
or crashed to the mat following a body slam? Professional wrestling may not be as
familiar to Canadians as a sport like hockey, though it can demand just as much
effort, skill, and sacrifice.

Back in 1996, Kurt Angle won a gold medal in freestyle wrestling
at the Olympics before transitioning into World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE,
formally WWF). He quickly became a champion there, too, though it wasn’t easy
for him to translate his experiences into professional wrestling.

“There’s just so many aspects of pro wrestling. If there was
ever a sport that was the complete opposite, it’s Olympic wrestling,” says
Angle. “It’s not just the stunts or the athletic ability. There’s character
development. There’s obviously promo skills, acting skills, how to politic the
right way, what to do… There’s no sport like it.”

Although professional wrestling matches are more like performances
than competitions, that doesn’t mean they aren’t taxing, difficult, or painful.

“The two most physical, demanding sports are Olympic-style
wrestling and football,” says Angle. “I’ve done them both for many, many, many
years, and neither one can hold a candle to the physicality of pro wrestling.
Not just because you’re landing on plywood, but you’re doing it 300 days a
year. By the time you’re 50, 55, you’re going to have arthritis in every part
of your body, and for pretty much the rest of your life you’re going to suffer.
But is it worth all that pain? I think so.”

Wrestling even infrequently carries a high risk of injury.
WWE constantly reminds its viewers, “Don’t try this at home, school, or
anywhere.” WWE Superstars undergo years of training to learn how to perform
their moves safely, and even local wrestlers go through weeks of intense
practice to learn the basics.

Graeme Keam, a promoter and wrestler for Primos Wrestling
Canada in Winnipeg, knows the dangers of the sport firsthand. During a hardcore
match featuring tables, tacks, and barbwire, Keam was on a table when his
opponent landed on his legs; however, the wood didn’t break, and he
hyperextended his knee.

“It was the only match I’ve ever done where I was terrified,”
says Keam, who wrestles under the name Mat Critic. “With the tacks and the
barbwire, it was very nerve-racking. I used to do hardcore matches, but it’s
not worth it. Leave that to the younger guys who don’t have anything special to
deliver.”

“I like to wrestle; I’m not a hardcore guy,” says Angle. “I
see a newcomer doing a hardcore match and I say, ‘See that bastard right there?
I will never work with him.’ I want to see somebody that can chain wrestle, who
has psychology, that can tell a story and do it safe.”

Much of pro wrestling is physical storytelling using
concepts like “spots” and “chain wrestling.” Chain wrestling describes a series
of moves, holds, and counters that keep matches fluid and fast-paced, but
they’re usually improvised. Conversely, spots are planned moments or attacks
that wrestlers know they need to perform during a match, and they help
structure a story leading up to who wins or loses.

“Some guys like to put the whole match together backstage,”
says Angle. “I don’t like to pre-plan all that much. I like to go out there and
improvise, but you always have to have a structure. You can’t just go out there
without a structure. You can, but the match won’t be quite as good.”

“It’s got its level of fake, but it has to, or else you
wouldn’t be able to guarantee anything,” says Keam. “With something like the
UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), you can pay 300 dollars for a seat to a
main event that lasts 30 seconds. At least with wrestling, you’re getting what
you came to see.”

Another aspect of pro wrestling, beyond the physical
storytelling, are the characters that get viewers invested. There are heroes
and villains that drive audiences to care about the outcomes of matches, which can
make talking on a microphone as important as wrestling in the ring.

“You could be the best physical wrestler in the world, but
if you don’t have a character that anybody is interested in, nobody cares,”
says Keam. “Even at our level, if you can’t sell 10 tickets to 10 friends,
you’re not doing it well.”

“My favourite was always the character development,” says
Angle, who played a hero and a villain at WWE. “Being a bad guy, there’s a lot
more dimension to it. I was such a good bad guy, whether it was being a goofball
or just plain arrogant, and when you’re good at it, people start to enjoy it.”

Regarding the future of the business, Angle says he’s
excited for professional wrestling, which is why he’s going to stay for about
four more years. He now works for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, though he
looks back fondly on his years in WWE.

“My career has been very blessed. There’s nothing else I can
add to it except more five star matches. I’ve done it all. I have no regrets
about my past or my wrestling.”

And that includes his rather drastic career change.

“In Olympic-style wrestling, one of the only things that’s
fun about it is getting your hand raised,” says Angle. “Pro wrestling? I love
the whole thing. I love entertaining the fans. So, which one do I respect more?
Olympic wrestling, by far. But which one do I love more? Pro wrestling.”

I'm often asked why I like professional wrestling. People wonder what the appeal is, and I usually say it's the live performance aspect. It's like a physical circus where performers sometimes go for over half an hour telling a story with only their actions. And some of the most thrilling moments rely on a Superstar or Diva's finisher.

Inevitably, the match ends with one of these moves -- unless there's a quick roll-up or something, but those aren't usually counted as "real" wins, and there's usually a rematch in order. So, finishers need to be spectacular moves that represent a character's personality.

Above are three examples of good finishers. Below, the reasons why.

1. Barrett's Bullhammer -- This one really depends on the person selling
them move, but then Ziggler could sell a brain freeze drinking tea. This
is what the Bullhammer should look like: brutal and effective. It also pairs well with Barrett's background of bare-knuckle boxing.

2. Paige's Scorpion Lock -- A unique, painful looking submission, much like AJ's Black Widow. Suitable for her flexible female opponents, plus Paige gets to look dominant (besides dressing like a dominatrix). Cool submissions like this are a great way for women to appear powerful without lifts.

3. Cesaro's Neutralizer -- Perfect for showing off his uncanny strength
against huge opponents. It's a simple lift with big impact, especially
when he's lifting 400-pound big-boys like Mark Henry, Brodus Clay, and The Great
Khali.

Check out https://vine.co/v/MJ2UXtVKipA to see these glorious finishers over, and over, and over, and...

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-60222073217477338202014-04-11T14:41:00.003-05:002014-04-11T14:51:05.577-05:00Paige has arrived!A few months ago, I wrote a blog post about three NXT Divas to watch out for in the future. Well, that future has arrived in the form of Summer Rae, Emma, and Paige, who all now have regular roles on RAW and Smackdown. The most exciting of these three, however, has to be Paige, who fought and defeated AJ Lee to become the NXT and Divas' Champ.

A lot happened during and after WrestleMania, but I want to take a moment to discuss the Divas' division again this week. The end of Taker's streak is huge, and I'll share my thoughts about that at some point, but...

I mean, come on. How sweet was that?

Daniel Bryan winning the WWEWHC was a great moment, although the outcome was somewhat expected, but I never imagined that Paige would debut the very next night on RAW. I mentioned earlier that the Divas' Division is trash right now, with nobody truly worthy of holding that title, and here comes the solution: AJ vs. Paige, a feud with no relation to that stupid reality show. It also helps that AJ can really put Paige over here and give the division the revitalization it's been craving.
Now, that may sound overzealous, and it probably is, but this could be the start of something great. If fans react strongly to this feud, and fans enjoy it enough, we could see more Divas like AJ and Paige in the future: women who grew up loving wrestling. Women who are devoted to and skilled at their craft.

It's fitting that someone like Lita was inducted into the Hall of Fame two days before Paige arrived.

It's a small glint, but the future of the Divas' division is looking brighter.
Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.

This Friday at Red River College's Exchange District Campus, my classmates and I are putting on the Creative Communications Magazine Fair. As our cover says, Boiler Magazine is Winnipeg's first men's food magazine, and in our first issue, we cover such topics as eating etiquette on first dates and recovering after a weekend of binge eating (and drinking).

We'll be holding a few activities at our booth, including eating contests. At 1 p.m. on April 4, we will adapt Silver Heights Restaurant's Biggins Siwiggins Burger eating challenge (pictured on the cover) for four people. If you want to try to take the big burger down in the time limit, come down to The Roblin Centre on Friday and participate.

The fair starts at noon and runs until 4.

We have a whole busy day planned, plus about a dozen other groups will also show off their finished project. We've all worked hard for this day, so we hope to see you at The Roblin Centre on April 4.

We'll see you on Friday! Until then, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.
This is unacceptable.

Since the WWE and World Heavyweight Championships merged a few months ago, I expected the United States and Intercontinental Championships to finally get some love and attention. So far, no luck. You'd think that with one less title for Superstars to feud for, they'd need to make the ones they have as prominent as possible to compensate. So far, no luck.

Right now, Big E's only involvement at 'Mania is in a Royal Rumble-style match (which should be sweet, even if the stakes aren't very high), and the Shield appear to be feuding with Corporate Kane and the Old Age Outlaws, so I doubt Ambrose will defend his belt either.

Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time Ambrose fought for his U.S. title, which begs the question: why does he even have it? Shield are doing well enough for themselves that they don't need the U.S. title attached to one of their three guys. They don't need the push in that way. I could see Reigns defeating Ambrose for it once they split up, and I figured that would be at 'Mania, but... Well, that's not happening.

Big E shouldn't have it either--not because he's a bad performer and doesn't deserve a belt, but recently the Intercontinental title has hurt people more than it's helped them. People win it, and they get a quick burst of popularity, but a couple months later nobody cares. At all. And then the torch gets passed to some new guy, and the previous champion fades away.

The IC title used to have the opposite effect. Guys would earn it, prove they were championship material, then move on to the next belt: either the WWE or the WHC. But now there's only the WWEWHC, and there are increasingly longer title reigns. Yes, I remember the days when JBL and HHH had their respective titles for like a year, but that was when there were other belts that actually meant something. Now, there's just the WWEWHC, and nothing is being done with any of the others.

So, what the hell? Why does only one belt have any prestige today? And what needs to be done to fix this? My suggestion is that they should put the U.S. or IC on main event guys and boost them that way. Imagine if like...Cena, Bryan, and Lesnar held today's singles titles. Suddenly you've got three huge ongoing story lines and three coveted belts.

The U.S. and IC titles have this weird stigma now of being for "up-and-comers" or whatever, like they're so far beneath main event guys, but why does it need to be that way? Why not make all the belts super prestigious, with only a little extra attention given to the WWEWHC? There are only three belts, after all, and there are so many Superstars right now, it'd be a wonderful way to keep more of them engaged in stories audiences care about.

But I want to know what you think they should do with the men's singles titles, so continue the discussion in the comments section. I'll be sure to give my thoughts on your potential solutions.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be jabroni.
Most are making great strides to build (and maintain) hype, though some are decelerating fast on the Road to WrestleMania. Unfortunately, one feud that has been stalling for some time has been Divas' Champion AJ Lee vs. Naomi.

Now, Naomi was injured, so it's no one's fault (except the person who viciously kneed her in the orbital bone), but now she's got a sparkly new eyepatch, and it's looking like she's going to end AJ's streak. So everything's going her way, I guess, but I couldn't care less. AJ has been in a holding pattern since the injury (and for a while before then, actually), and the feud has no fuel except for that stale old "I beat you, so I get a title shot" story line that never manages to be exciting.

AJ hasn't been doing anything with the belt, which isn't her fault either, but that's how these things work. She's had the thing longer than anybody ever, and it's time for a change. Not necessarily a change for the better, but a change nonetheless.

I imagine Tamina and AJ will feud without the belt in the picture, and then the "Total Divas" can battle for it. But again, I don't care. Total Divas is going to commandeer the Divas' division any second now, alienating everyone who doesn't watch that garbage, as arguments from that show start spilling over onto RAW and SmackDown!, like, "Remember that thing you did during taping? Well, now I want revenge!" And crap like that.

You know it'd gonna happen. Just brace for it. I can hear Cole now, telling us to download the new Total Divas app and follow all the wacky drama on the WWE Network. Yay! Pretty soon the division will be divided between Total Divas and...Partial Divas? Yeah, let's go with that. Which might be okay. Maybe it'll be like the old days, with the Divas' Championship and the Women's Championship. The whole RAW vs. SmackDown! thing has been moot for a while, but it could work, and it wouldn't take much.

But I'm really just thinking of ways they can revitalize the Divas' Division. It seems hopeless at the moment with the "talent" they have available, but there are possibilities beyond this reality show BS. Maybe they'll make the Diva's Championship bout at WrestleMania a Table Match? That happens sometimes, right? Otherwise, I won't be invested. At all.

Next time on the Ramble: Why are there no feuds for the Intercontinental or U.S. Titles at 'Mania?!

Until then, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-58743819757673592612014-03-15T13:01:00.003-05:002014-03-15T13:16:41.281-05:00Will you PLEASE -- shut -- the hell -- up?!There's something refreshing about watching wrestling without the constant, grating chatter of inane monkeys. I'm talking of course about Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler, and JBL, the trio of commentators who never, and I mean NEVER, stop bickering and bitching throughout RAW and Smackdown. Most of the time they don't add anything relevant, insightful or engaging, and they actually detract from my enjoyment of the show.

So when I went to a live show on March 7, I was relieved to finally be allowed to watch the Superstars perform without being distracted and annoyed by those three argumentative assclowns. Never once did I think, "You know what this impressive show of physical story telling is missing? A grown man telling his broadcast partner to call a WAAAHmbulance. Again!" I didn't miss them at all, and that got me thinking:

WWE needs to add the option of muting the announcers.

With the WWE Network, it's certainly possible now. Before, they'd have to broadcast two different feeds on multiple channels, or play an announcer-free version later or something, but with the WWE Network, they can do it all digitally. They can simultaneously stream separate shows.

I would pay money -- hell, I would pay EXTRA to be able to watch WWE without announcers. The sound of slamming the guy on the mat, the rowdy chants, the entrance themes -- I want to hear what I would hear live, and nothing more. It's just clutter, and it's gotta stop.

I can't concentrate on the matches. They argue about dance moves sometimes! Even when they call the match, they repeat themselves week after week and state the obvious. They have a stock response for every signature move, taunt, entrance, and expression on a guy's face. I'm sick of their catch phrases, I'm tired of their voices, and I'm fed up with their arguing.

Enough is enough.

It's gotten to the point where I'm actually groaning and commenting out loud on the stupid things they say. Imagine watching every single movie for the first time with the director's commentary on; it'd drive you mental. There's no way you could enjoy it fully. For THREE HOURS every Monday, it's a steady stream of verbal diarrhea with no respite save for the brief moment when I fast forward through the commercials.

"It's a flying goat!" -- "Vintage Orton!" -- "Shut up and call the match!" -- "Hash tag Yes Movement!" -- "Don't forget to the download the WWE App!" -- "The most chilling/thrilling/intimidating/entertaining match/entrance/Superstar/event of ALL TIME!"

I can't take it. Just thinking about them is irritating. I can't dwell on this anymore, so...

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-53486711984045361692014-03-06T19:27:00.001-06:002014-03-06T19:27:15.074-06:00Sargent & Victor & Gillian & Theresa & MeLet’s take a break from the exasperating state of WWE to
highlight a certain famous Winnipegger. No, I’m not talking about Chris
Jericho. Ladies and gentlemen, I interrupt your scheduled WWE blog post to
bring you my far-from-expert opinion on Nahlah Ayed’s book, A Thousand Farewells.

If you watch or follow CBC News, you may be familiar with Nahlah
Ayed, a foreign correspondent who has spent years covering the Middle East. In A Thousand Farewells, Ayed gives a
candid look into her life and her experiences in the region, providing extensive
and sometimes startling insight well beyond standard reporting. Here are some
of my thoughts on what I read.

Ayed provides excellent context, telling the circumstances
of the Middle East and its people. Through her family’s hardships and
sacrifices, and her own experiences as a child living in a refugee camp, the
reader relates with the desperation so common in the region. Throughout her
book, Ayed writes not only about her family, but about the rage, frustration,
and grief of dozens of individuals, helping the reader comprehend the situation.
By knowing their personal strife, we can better understand the underlying
causes, the political turmoil, and the conflicting desire for stability and change.

The Middle East can seem so far away from Winnipeg, its
problems and people just vague information in the news, but Ayed puts it into
perspective by giving the poverty and oppression voices. We move from the
comforts of Canada to the slums of Jordan with her, and the best parts of the
book are when she connects the reader with the emotions of those coping with adversity
that is hard to even imagine.

What doesn’t work so well, however, are the frequently long,
dry history lessons. With all the dates, names, and sometimes extraneous
details, the history drags in parts and removes the reader from the narrative.
While it’s important to know the reasons behind the revolutions later in the book—the senseless
torture, futile elections, unwarranted arrests—the occasionally redundant
explanations of political parties and religious groups could’ve probably been
left out.

Also, it might’ve been nice to hear more from the people who
were so close to Ayed during her years in the Middle East. She frequently
mentions her driver, her fixer, her cameramen and producers, but rarely do they
say or do anything—in the book, anyway. I’m sure they were very vocal during
their time with Ayed. I get that she couldn’t exactly record them for quotes at
all times, but she seems isolated and alone when really she’s traveling with a
tight group. If something is missing from the book, it’s more interactions with
her companions, because they often feel like faceless ghosts floating at her
side.

And that’s weird, because at the end of the day, the book is
about understanding people, which is why I wish there were less raw history lessons
and more reactions and interviews. If journalists take anything away from A Thousand Farewells, let it be that
stories are not about stark statistics or a chronology of events. Sure, those
things can help create context for a story, but they are not the story itself.

For years I’ve watched stories about conflicts in the Middle
East, but rarely have they felt so important or tangible than when I was
reading A Thousand Farewells and
learning about the people involved. The number of people who have died in a
conflict is tragic. However, that statistic means little compared to the
reactions of people witnessing all those dead getting ripped out of a mass grave.

To any journalists reading this, the following was one of my
favourite bits from the book, and I hope you can appreciate why.

Nahlah Ayed wrote: “You must also be able to put yourself in
the shoes of anyone, anywhere, to truly tell their story. People are not quotes
or clips used to illustrate stories about war and conflict. People are the story, always.”

And I think that’s why non-fiction television shows like The First 48 are growing in popularity.
You turn on the news and you hear stories of crime every night. Someone gets
robbed, someone gets assaulted, someone gets killed, but you don’t see or hear anyone
involved outside of maybe a photograph and a brief clip or quote.

But with
something like The First 48, you
witness the mother's reaction to her son getting shot. You see the wife’s
reaction to her husband getting arrested. You see killers
and victims in their natural state, and it’s all much more powerful and meaningful compared to the objective news.

A Thousand Farewells and The First 48 share that spirit of journalism: people are the real story. Both cover stories we receive in the form of raw information from other sources, and both enhance those stories by giving us the emotion. Through interviews and reactions, the stories become personal and engaging in a way that straight facts simply can't reproduce. That's what makes them so intriguing.

That said, I don’t think people enjoy watching tragedies. I believe we
empathize, and perhaps we feel obligated to know and tell these stories to
honour the victims and acknowledge the events that affect our world. It does no
one any good to ignore suffering simply because it’s uncomfortable. People will
never make strides toward change or progress unless they can learn from the
mistakes and choices of others.

A Thousand Farewells
affected me in that it opened my eyes to a world I’ve been guilty of ignoring.
I would turn on the news to see young Arab people throwing rocks at riot
police, and I’d just shake my head and change the channel, never bothering to
wonder why. “That has nothing to do with me,” I might think, but the world is
so much bigger than Canada, even if it all sometimes feels so far away.

I’m glad Ayed could enlighten me to the circumstances of the
Middle East and its people. She helped me understand that even if I might curse
Winnipeg as its winter winds scratch through my gloves and bite my fingers, I
should never take this land for granted. I think most of us here in Canada know
how fortunate we are compared to other regions of the world—but sometimes it’s nice to have a reminder.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don’t be a jabroni.

I'm still pumped for WrestleMania, aside from the main event, but Elimination Chamber has been little more than a road block for a while now. Basically it exists only to set up matches for WrestleMania. There used to be two chamber matches in a night, and they used to be brutal, but with the major belts now combined, the pay-per-view is somewhat restricted this year. That's not to mention the winner is predictable, and the card is looking kind of weak, and...

Bleh.

I'd do my usual three predictions, but there are only two matches really worth talking about: The Wyatts vs. The Shield, something I've been wanting to see for some time, and the Chamber itself.

Wyatts vs. Shield is interesting not only because it should be an incredible match, but because the Wyatts haven't had a really big pay-per-view win yet, and The Shield look to be dissolving soon, with "dissension in the ranks" and all that. Wyatts beating Shield would be huge for them, especially with a convincing clean win. It'll help them gain some momentum going forward, and we can maybe, finally see some singles competition/gimmicks for Shield members once they inevitably split.

And you know, I could talk about the Chamber too, but Randy Orton will win. I hope I'm wrong. I'm probably not. So let's talk about The Shield and what their singles careers might look like instead.

Dean Ambrose could be an amazing villain if allowed some creative freedom with his character. Right now he's trapped by a "weak link" angle that isn't getting him anywhere. If he gets crazy(er), he could really do some damage wherever he goes. He likely won't be pushed, even though he was U.S. champ not too long ago, but if he keeps putting on entertaining matches and promos, it won't matter. I say he should be happy playing around and having fun in the mid-card for the time being.

Seth Rollins was NXT champ and a pretty popular face, but I'm worried about him because while he's a fantastic physical wrestler, he might get stuck in Kofi Kingston territory. Smaller guys like him tend to pull off incredible moves and have thrilling, memorable moments here and there, but they don't main event. The exception of course is CM Punk. Maybe they'll fill his void with Seth simply because they look alike? Who knows, but I like Seth a lot and don't wanna see him buried.

Roman Reigns is...Roman Reigns. I talked about him in a previous post, so I'll just quickly say that he could be massive within no time. He's big, fast, charismatic, popular, pretty, the real deal. Reigns could be a future champion, if not the future face of the company. He'd have to contend with Cesaro's heat right now, since The Real Americans could split soon if they decide to push Cesaro, but that's another whole topic for another day.

Anyway, I'm picking Wyatts to beat Shield, and then looking forward to WrestleMania. If through some miracle Daniel Bryan or Cesaro win the Chamber I'll be pumped for the main event, but otherwise I don't care. Batista vs. Orton is the match no one wants to see, and since it'll be the last match of the night, I might actually not see it.We'll, er...see.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-6336375243820761632014-02-09T10:02:00.000-06:002014-02-09T10:16:26.433-06:00Who is the next face of WWE?John Cena has arguably been the face of WWE for the last decade, being the biggest draw for casual fans, appearing in multiple films and generating the most money for the company.

Now, for the purposes of this post, let's say the "face" of WWE is the person placed on posters, the one who sells tickets and merchandise, the one with which the average person and the media is most familiar. If you ask someone on the street who John Cena or The Rock is, they'll probably know. If you ask who Bray Wyatt is, however, you might find more than a few clueless individuals.

The problem is that WWE isn't yet willing to let their current
superstars headline big events (like WrestleMania), opting instead to
promote past superstars who more people are familiar with (Rock,
Batista, etc.). It makes sense from a business standpoint--regular
viewers will watch WM anyway, so target casual fans--but eventually WWE
will "run out" of these past stars as they age and people stop caring about their infrequent appearances. Eventually, they'll need a new face to drive sales.

So, who's the next face of WWE? Let's consider...

Daniel Bryan

Likely the most popular superstar among regular viewers right now, Daniel Bryan is an incredible technical wrestler with a massive fan base, but the average person is probably unaware of him, his talent, or his ability. Despite his consistently thrilling performances, Bryan will need some considerable promotion to make him relevant outside of those who watch WWE every week.

Sheamus

This guy already sells merch, has appeared in commercials promoting the brand, is especially popular with female and young viewers, and puts on consistent performances that are, while not always spectacular, usually free from botches and include a plethora of engaging, signature moves. It wouldn't be hard to write a story line for Sheamus that would put him over--the issue is his very specific character, an Irish hooligan that may not appeal to a vast audience.

Roman Reigns

This may sound like an odd pick, but Reigns is The Rock's cousin after all, and he's arguably the most popular member of The Shield, the WWE's premier, ticket-driving faction right now. He's only been in WWE for under 2 years, but with the right campaign, his popularity could skyrocket. He has the looks, talents, and fans to quickly rise to the top. His repertoire of signature moves is rapidly growing (Superman Punch, Spear, Apron Dropkick, etc.), so not only is he exciting to watch, he's only a few steps away from greatness.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.
When I heard the news, I frantically scoured the Internet hoping for some definite proof that would refute the "rumours". I have since moved past the "denial" phase of loss and moved up to "bargaining".

Maybe he's not gone for good, and Punk and WWE will reconcile in the near future. Maybe it's a story line. And maybe this is what's best for business.

It's no secret that people were furious following Royal Rumble. Although Batista winning the thing was the most predictable result, it was also the most enraging. It meant that WWE didn't care to adjust their plans or give the viewers what they wanted. It meant that Batista, a "part-time" wrestler was getting the big push for the main event of WrestleMania. And for many, it meant that WWE didn't care about its fans.

And that's why, as sad as I am to see CM Punk go, I'm optimistic that his actions will facilitate change--the theme of his original "pipe bomb" promo that propelled him to the top of WWE.

The fans can't do anything but not watch. The problem is there are guys like Punk, and Bryan, and the members of The Shield, who people do want to see, and they're willing to put up with the nonsense and BS to watch those particular wrestlers. And, with a company the size of WWE, something catastrophic would need to happen for there to be a significant dip in viewership.

However, by Punk leaving, he's sending a message. He's saying that, since the fans are apparently helpless to affect the program, he'll do what he can to show the company they're doing something wrong. Others may not follow him out the door, but the WWE can't ignore Punk's behavior. Supposedly, Punk was most upset by the fact that WWE are pushing part-timers like Batista instead of the guys who bust their asses for the company on a daily bases, and I have to say I agree.

In order to make the next legends, the next "part-time" draws for WrestleMania like Rock and Batista, they need to let the guys they've got now break through that glass ceiling, but WWE seems content to rely on the past.

How can Bryan be a big WrestleMania draw if you keep holding him back?
How can Roman Reigns become the next breakout star unless you let him break out?
WWE needs to answer these obvious questions soon.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.
And the whole crowd booed. Hopefully this will inspire the writers to smarten the hell up. Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-33424388027728105172014-01-24T10:30:00.000-06:002014-01-24T10:33:26.335-06:00This Sunday, the Royal Rumble is finally here!As I've mentioned before, the Royal Rumble is my favourite match type, and it's usually my favourite match of the year. Heck, I even named this blog after it. However, this year the entrants leave me somewhat wanting. I have a feeling the match will be a relative disappointment, and I'll explain why.

Batista, who was meant to be a surprise entrant in this year's Royal Rumble, had to be revealed early because a Las Vegas venue spoiled his return. Since he's likely to win it, the surprise would've made his victory much more palatable, but now the match hinges on his performance and results.

Bray Wyatt has a singles match, meaning he probably won't be an entrant--even though the rest of the Wyatt family will be, which is ridiculous. If Bray was in the Rumble, Harper and Rowan could have had a role in protected him, but those guys have no shot at winning it themselves.

Daniel Bryan is in that match with Bray, so he's probably not going to be involved. :(

Brock Lesnar is ALSO in a singles match, so he's probably not in the Rumble either.

And, finally CM Punk is the #1 entrant, meaning he'll either be eliminated around the midpoint, forcing someone less talented to carry the proceedings, or he'll make it all the way to the end to face off against Batista. It's a predictable result, and in pro wrestling, predictability is poison.

And that's really my prediction for this thing: CM Punk or Batista. I would've said Daniel Bryan, and if he wrestles in two matches on Sunday despite concussion worries, I will say Daniel Bryan, but again, he's in a match already. That's not to say he absolutely cannot be in the Rumble; Dolph Ziggler was an entrant after competing in a singles match in the same night, but...well, I guess we'll see.

Batista has the best chance, given that he was meant to be a surprise. I doubt they'll change their plans based on that spoiler, so I see him winning it, especially with rumours that Punk will be facing Triple H at Wrestlemania. Knowing that, my guess is that Punk and Batista will be the final two competitors. Punk will be on the cusp of victory just before the Authority screws him somehow, allowing Batista to win.

But I hope I'm wrong. If that's how it ends, it'll be too predictable and disappointing for me. Batista isn't who I want to see in the main event at Wrestlemania, and he isn't who I want to see hold the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Sadly, that seems to be where everything is heading. Maybe Brock wins at Elimination Chamber for a Lesnar vs. Batista main event? That might not be a bad consolation match, but that would mean Daniel Bryan wouldn't be in the position he deserves.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-23549936899343522512014-01-17T22:51:00.001-06:002014-01-17T22:58:20.658-06:00WWE Network is finally coming! On Feb. 24, the long-awaited, long-delayed WWE Network finally arrives...in the US!
Canadians like me will have to wait until the summer or later.

Poo.

There are some nifty features that come with the WWE Network, which the company boasts is the "first 24-hour network of its kind." I'd have to do some research to dispute them, but the content they're promising is pretty impressive.

It will be a subscription based service like Netflix for $9.99 a month, and with that comes access to an archive of every past pay-per-view (and some key shows), pre- and post-shows for regular programs, HD replays of programs, new programming (including another reality show), availability on laptops, smart phones and tablets, and best of all--every new WWE pay-per-view at no additional cost!

That last feature alone is well worth the price.

Normally, a WWE pay-per-view costs about $40, and that's not $40 x 12; there are more than 12 pay-per-views a year. The cost to buy every pay-per-view a year right now: $675! The cost of every pay-per-view with the WWE Network? $120! That is a significant discount. And it makes sense.

WWE pay-per-views sales aren't as strong as they once were, especially since many fans admit to watching streams of the events for free on-line. They're just too expensive, and unless you go to a movie theater to watch them (like I do) or have a viewing party where everyone splits the bill (like I rarely do), you probably don't want to pay $40 to watch a 3-hour program by yourself. (FYI, movie theater tickets are about $15, and it's like one big viewing party sometimes. It's the one time I don't mind people talking in the theater -- especially when people start chants!)

However, having checked out some of these free streams, the quality is often very poor and sometimes the streams flat-out crash in the middle of a show. This generous discount through the WWE Network should hopefully encourage people to PAY for their pay-per-views. That way, the WWE can get paid for the entertainment they're providing (the best matches/match-ups are always saved for pay-per-views), and WWE fans can get HD pay-per-views for 25 per cent the usual cost. As my Public Relation instructor often says, "it's a win-win" (right after he says never to say that).

In any case, I know I'll be subscribing to the WWE Network the moment it's available in Canada.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-6674936885089110422014-01-08T20:50:00.002-06:002014-01-08T20:50:30.382-06:00Daniel WyattThis week, Daniel Bryan -- er, Wyatt had his first match as a member of the Wyatt Family.

That's right. I may have failed to mention this, but Daniel recently surrendered to Bray Wyatt and joined his sheepish cult of bearded, backwoods alligator wrestlers. Apparently, he did this because he was tired of them beating him up -- but his true motive could've been anything. Maybe he wants to increase his odds in the Royal Rumble (my favourite match type) by having 3 powerful allies, or he means to destroy the Wyatts from the inside. Or maybe the authority, the real life authority, wants Daniel Bryan out of the title picture heading into Wrestlmania, so they're keeping him occupied.

But I could speculate all day -- and I will.

Daniel's match this Monday on RAW was clearly meant to keep his involvement with the Wyatts vague. There were frequent tags, preventing Daniel from getting too great a pop from the crowd. No hot tag, no hype -- he was simply on the Wyatts' team. This works, since it makes Daniel's role somewhat mysterious, and it seems to be leading to a bigger payoff down the road.

The Wyatts lost due to miscommunication, leading Daniel to demand that they (Luke Harper and Eric Rowan) let him contribute. As they should -- Daniel is by far the single strongest Wyatt Family member now. The segment led to the announcement of Daniel teaming with Bray Wyatt next week -- and I imagine this is when the storyline will really start to unfold. This story could go in many different directions, and I believe the planned direction will be a bit more defined next week.

I still think Daniel has a good shot at winning the Royal Rumble. Cena or Orton will come out of Royal Rumble the champion, and it makes sense for Daniel to fight either one of them at Wrestlemania. If not for the new Wyatt angle, I'd say his victory is assured, but now I'm not 100% sure. Batista is returning for the Rumble, a surprise that was supposed to be...well, a surprise, until the info got leaked. Shaemus may return, and that's not to mention any other big superstars that usually appear around this time, like The Rock and Brock Lesnar. And THAT'S not to mention other contenders for the main event of Wrestlemania, such as CM Punk.

In any case, I can't wait for the Royal Rumble. I look forward to it every year, what with the Superstars getting their order numbers, and the surprise comebacks, and the unforgettable moments -- and the confirmation of Wrestlemania's main event. The road to Wrestlemania is long -- roughly 3 months of hype -- but this is when WWE produces its best content. Should be fun.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-21083142389817550092013-12-07T03:18:00.000-06:002013-12-07T18:59:11.152-06:00The Unified Championship? WHAT!?Here's why statistics are dumb.

On Monday Night Raw, fans got to choose the name for the new combined title on the WWE app.
The choices were as follows:

Unified Champion -- 38%
Undisputed WWE Champion -- 31%
Undisputed World Champion -- 31%

Notice anything strange about these results?

Yeah! 62% of voters preferred the word "Undisputed" to "Unified". The discrepancy was only in the WWE/World designation, which skewed the count. This is why social media and desperation regarding interaction does not (sometimes) work.

More people liked the "undisputed" name because it's a historic belt that means something. Chris Jericho won the first ever Undisputed Title by beating The Rock and Steve Austin in one night! But the Unified Champion? Where's the prestige? The honour? The legacy? The name is meaningless.

It'll have to start from scratch!

The worst part (a bad part, anyway) is that the WWE just spent a ton of money and research developing a new WWE title. It's only a couple months old! Now we're meant to expect a new belt, and believe that Superstars will want to battle for it? The title means nothing -- except for that Cena or Orton won it ONCE!

At this point, the NXT title is more prestigious.
Speaking of which, I have an NXT title fight to watch.
If you'll excuse me...

Have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni!
Ahem....But enough about that.

Let's look forward to TLC, which is already looking pretty awesome.

As I predicted the day Cena was announced to fight Alberto Del Rio, Cena vs. Orton is now set for TLC, and it will be for both the WWE and World Heavyweight Championship. The rest of my prediction was that Orton would win that match, become the new "face of the company" (or whatever), and then Daniel Bryan would win it from him...buuut now Bryan is forming a tag team with CM Punk called The Beard and The Best.
That's the face of a champion!

So that should be amazing, too.

Punk and Bryan are two of the best Superstars today, and if they get some legitimate momentum going as a tag team, they could be champions for a long, long time. They're also feuding with both of the other big teams, the Wyatts and the Shield, so there's plenty of fuel here for the next few months. Bryan already had a huge tag team run with Kane (Team Hell No), so he's no stranger to those bronze belts.

The last thing I wanna mention is that Xavier Woods has come to RAW!
Congrats to the newest NXT grad!

He's brand new, so I'll forgive him coming in with his dorky dancing gimmick. I love the Over 9000 and Morphin' Time and all that -- I am a child of the 90s after all -- but these fun, goofy gimmicks often trap Superstars at the mid-card or jobber level. Just look at Brodus Clay and Fandango. Xavier even came out with The Funkadactyls.

A bad omen, perhaps?
Until next time, have a nice day and don't be a jabroni.
It happened this past RAW in the main event, a 12-man tag match.

(One big happy family)

As expected, the Wyatts and the Shield ended up bickering, unable to work together, and when they did work together, it was only in scrambled brawls. Sure, they tagged each other here and there (usually by smacking the other guy while he was distracted), but they didn't collaborate in any big double-team attacks, which is too bad. Half of them are giants and could easily perform any double-team move they imagined, so they should've taken advantage of the grouping.

(One of few moments the Wyatts and Shield were in-ring together)

The match was just okay. Luke Harper of the Wyatts delivered an awesome running sit-down powerbomb to Daniel Bryan, a move that could easily be Harper's second finisher. Unfortunately, the more spectacular attacks were performed by the "good guy group" of Punk, Bryan, the Rhodes Brothers & the Usos. The bad guys generally performed holds and did the whole "we're-gonna-trap-you-in-our-corner" thing. CM Punk's hot tag was pretty cool, though. He dismantled the Shield on his own, even delivering this sweet double-DDT/neckbreaker thingy on Rollins and Ambrose.

(Step 1: Fasten both heads beneath underarms)

(Step 2: Boom!)

Punk ended up pinning Ambrose, which is fine I guess. Punk could realistically defeat any member of the Shield, so at least it wasn't an Uso making Bray Wyatt tap out or something.

So the Wyatt/Shield experience was kind of lame, but they've got plenty of time to group, fight, or whatever. I'd like to think it was just another taste of what's to come. At this point I'm thinking a 3-on-3 fight is in the works, because after this I can't see them cooperating, but we'll see what happens in the coming weeks.

Anyway, right after the match, a brawl broke out and the Real Americans joined the fray.
Oh, and Rey Mysterio returned.

But I'll get into that some other time.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni!
Hm... That's never happened before.

Backstory: Watching last night's Smackdown on DVR. There is a man dressed as Superman in the crowd. John Cena points him out, and after some cheers, chants, and banter he says:
"...the only man who makes spandex look baggy."

Hah! He's skinny.

That is all.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-59202961370609506192013-11-15T18:03:00.002-06:002013-11-16T11:57:22.663-06:00The Wyatts vs. The ShieldThis week on Monday Night RAW, the Wyatts briefly brawled with the Shield.

And it was amazing. Sort of.

Whenever two of the biggest teams in WWE clash, it's (almost) always a fantastic bout, but this wasn't a match or anything. This was just a taste, like the bits of cookie crumbs the Wyatts probably find in their beards. It's unclear whether the Wyatts will in fact face the Shield in a match, but it's a possibility.
Here are three likely scenarios following the fallout of that fight:

1. The Wyatts vs. The Shield

Obviously this is one scenario. The problem is that the WWE doesn't like to have bad guys fighting other bad guys. One team needs to be made up of heroes, and the other villains. The Shield could possibly become heroes, given their, um...appeal...but it would take some doing. The Shield have been major villains for about a year now, and I can't help but think they'd split up after a face turn. They're too young a team for me to recommend they split, but the Nexus were together for about this long when they broke apart, so it could happen.

2. Wyatts & Shield vs. Punk and Bryan, Cody and Goldust, and the Usos.

Partway through the fight between The Wyatts and The Shield, they attacked CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, and the other four Superstars hopped in. Thus it was 6 villains vs. 6 heroes. The Survivor Series pay-per-view is coming up, and every year there's a huge 5-on-5 match there -- but that's the thing. It's a 5-on-5 match, not a 6-on-6. Maybe Bray Wyatt will sit out the match in his rocking chair, or one of the Usos will be injured, or Dean Ambrose will be involved in a US Title match instead. Whatever the case, something needs to happen to whittle the numbers down. Unless it IS a 6-on-6 match this year. Who knows.

3. Nothing

It's also possible The Wyatts vs. The Shield was only a teaser after all. They may never actually fight each other or fight together in any meaningful way. That would be a shame. Just a year ago, all six of these guys were on NXT, and now they're sparking massive brawls to end main events. I want to see these two teams FIGHT, but there's some fear in the back of my mind that says I may never get to see it.

I'll be sure to write an angry blog about it if that happens.

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.

Yepp. Kane, in a suit and tie, officially joined the group tentatively called The Authority. He joins Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, WWE Champion Randy Orton and The Shield, making him the 7th member of the dominant stable. I'm guessing Kane, The Shield and one other Superstar will form a corporate team for the annual 5 on 5 Survivor Series match coming up -- but let's focus on Kane's look for now.

Kane has always had a "fire and brimstone" gimmick. He's always been a monster, and even when he was spoofing himself or playing in the buddy comedy that was Kane & Daniel Bryan, he has always been a demonic character. First he never spoke, then he started talking, then he took his mask off and started talking a lot, then he put the mask back on...but now he's a completely different beast.

He came out to the same entrance music on Monday, with the fire and everything, which didn't fit his new look at all, but he definitely had a different attitude about him, a different gait or something. This marks the biggest change Kane has made in his career. I don't know if they'll also change his entrance theme, but they should. Characters go through transformations, and this could really work for Kane.

He still looks intimidating, and we know he can still do some damage in the ring. This new Kane will succeed or fail based on his "marketing" and his promos, which could really go anywhere at this point.

We'll always have this monstrous incarnation of Kane:

But I for one am excited by his drastic transformation, and I can't wait to see where it goes.

Respect The Authority!

Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.
No!"For this new format, I'll cover what I loved and hated about a particular story or moment.
The first subject of "Yes! No!"?

Damien Sandow vs. John Cena for the World Heavyweight Championship

This past Monday on RAW, Sandow cashed in his Money in the Bank contract, opening the show with a title match against John Cena. Cena won, making Sandow only the second person to cash in Money in the Bank and lose -- the other person being Cena himself. My thoughts?

No!
Damien Sandow isn't John Cena. That's obvious, but what do I mean by that? Well, when Cena cashed in his contract and lost his title match to CM Punk, he was perfectly fine afterward because John Cena is John Cena. No matter who he loses to, or how, he'll always get title shots, main event matches and championships. But Damien Sandow, not being John Cena, doesn't have that luxury. He just lost what might be his only title opportunity for a very long time.

Yes!
Although Sandow lost, he had a terrific match with Cena, showcasing his talent and proving why he's main event material. While he's not a main event guy right now, he certainly could be, and probably will be, in the not-too-distant-(I-hope) future.

No!
Unfortunately, even though Cena just came back from elbow surgery, just fought at Hell in a Cell, and was brutally attacked by Sandow just before their match, Sandow still lost! I understand that this was meant to make Cena look like a superhero -- and in fact the announcers referred to him as Superman about five times during the match -- it also made Sandow look pathetic. It made Sandow look like he could never beat John Cena. Hopefully Cena is the first person Sandow beats when he finally gets the push he deserves.

Yes!
Cena can bring credibility back to the World Heavyweight Championship. Because he now seems like a superhero, and because John Cena is John Cena, he can take what is considered a secondary belt and make it relevant again. As much as I like Sandow as a wrestler, he could never do for the World Heavyweight Championship what Cena can do today. I don't like Cena as a wrestler, comedian, performer or entertainer of any sort, but with the right feuds, writing and #1 contenders, this could be the best thing to happen to the World Heavyweight Championship in years.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00746551149429514594noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3774226815168629401.post-41419495335802585812013-10-24T19:52:00.003-05:002013-10-24T20:00:46.436-05:00Another Pay-Per-View?The Hell in a Cell PPV is this Sunday, so let's look at the three Hell in a Cell matches.

Match #1: CM Punk vs. Ryback and Paul Heyman

Here we've got a handicap match. For some reason, despite Heyman frequently interfering in Punk's past matches with Ryback and costing him many victories, Punk actually wants to face him and Ryback at the same time.

...Makes sense to me.

For Battleground I predicted that Ryback would win, and I'm doing so again -- even though he lost last time. If Ryback, who's supposed to be this monstrous bodyguard, not only fails to protect Heyman but loses again, he'll be buried and his stock will plummet. He needs this victory, especially considering the match type.

Winner: Ryback

Match #2: Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena

I kind of talked about this in my last post, so I'll keep it brief. I fully expect Cena to win this one. WWE has promoted the hell out of Cena for the last week or so, and while I'll be pleasantly shocked if ADR is still champion after Sunday, all roads are leading toward Cena vs. Orton.

Winner: John Cena

Match #3: Randy Orton vs. Daniel Bryan w/Special Guest Referee Shawn Michaels

As I said, all roads are leading toward Cena vs. Orton. So, here's my far-reaching prediction:

Cena and Orton become World Heavyweight Champion and WWE Champion (thanks to Shawn Michaels screwing Daniel Bryan). Cena and Orton fight to decide who is the real face of the WWE, and who is the Undisputed WWE Champion. Orton defeats Cena. Daniel Bryan defeats Orton.

This just makes sense! Daniel Bryan is carrying the most hype in the WWE right now, and he's positioned for a huge title run. This Hell in a Cell match is only setting up something much bigger, something that could alter the WWE for the rest of 2013 and through to Wrestlemania.

Winner: Randy Orton.

Patriotism isn't new to the WWE. Hulk Hogan's theme song actually claims, repeatedly, "I am a real American!" But the Real Americans have made themselves a relevant team by tackling relevant social issues, such as anti-immigration, prejudice and bigotry. In this PG-era of professional wrestling, these xenophobic zealots aren't afraid to exercise their First Amendment right, and while their words may offend some viewers, they are undeniably talented. Those who recognize that talent continue to place their hands over their hearts and say with them in a loud, clear voice: "We the people!"

#2 - Los Matadores

Primo and Epico were decent wrestlers with an awful gimmick, but when they "debuted" in late September as flamboyant bullfighters, their stock instantly skyrocketed. Los Matadores is a perfect example of how the right gimmick can make boring wrestlers entertaining. Even as Tag Team Champions, Primo and Epico weren't generating any hype, but as Diego and Fernando, they suddenly appear amazing. With new moves, a new look and a masked mascot (El Torito, a little person in a bull costume), Los Matadores are primed to make an epic impact in the Tag Team Division.

Another tag team. Noticing a pattern? For years the Tag Team Division in the WWE was terrible, but out of nowhere teams have emerged to revitalize it. Here's another great example of a gimmick reviving a stale superstar. The leader of this backwoods hillbilly cult, Bray Wyatt, was the forgettable Husky Harris not too long ago. And now look at him: he's making a rocking chair look intimidating. Fresh out of NXT, the Wyatt Family has only been on Raw and Smackdown for a few months, but with the proper timing they could instantly rise to become the biggest tag team in the business - literally. I for one am excited for their future in the WWE.
Until next time, have a nice day, and don't be a jabroni.
